India demolishes famous British-built bridge in purge of colonial legacy.

Mumbai’s Elphinstone Road Overbridge, constructed from Glaswegian steel in 1913.An Indian bridge built by the British a century ago has been demolished to make way for a motorway.

The Elphinstone Road Overbridge, which was built in Mumbai in 1913, was knocked down overnight as India continued to purge its colonial legacy.

Officials said the 121ft structure, constructed from steel forged in Glasgow, had “outlived its utility”.

The bridge was the most recognisable east-west link between Parel and Prabhadevi, two districts of one of the world’s most congested cities.

Swapnil Nila, the chief public relations officer of Central Railway, said: “The dismantling marks the end of an era but also the beginning of a critical upgrade to Mumbai’s transport network.”
