2020, tensions over a remote border region in the Himalayas resulted in deadly hand-to-hand clashes between Indian and Chinese troops. The issue has strained ties ever since.

The top diplomat in New Delhi announced on Monday that the governments of China and India had reached an agreement to establish a patrolling arrangement along the disputed border area in the Himayalas.

Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said that a border area pact could lead to disengagement and resolution of tensions that sparked a deadly confrontation in 2020.

Misri said diplomatic and military negotiators from the two countries have held rounds of talks over the past few weeks.
