Xherdan Shaqiri has announced his retirement from international football following the European Championship. The former Liverpool and Bayern Munich midfielder became the only European player to score in six consecutive major tournaments when he netted in Switzerland’s 1-1 draw with Scotland in Germany.

Xherdan Shaqiri played in two of Switzerland’s five matches before they were eliminated in the quarter-finals by England on penalties. The 32-year-old debuted for the Swiss national team in 2010 and ends his international career with 125 caps and 32 goals.

Shaqiri shared his farewell on X, expressing his gratitude and pride. “Seven tournaments, many goals, 14 years with the Swiss national team, and unforgettable moments. It’s time to say goodbye to the national team. Great memories remain, and I say to you all, thank you.”

Shaqiri’s first tournament goals came from a stunning hat-trick in a 3-0 win over Honduras at the 2014 World Cup. He scored 10 goals in the last three World Cups and European Championships, showcasing his consistent performance on the big stage.

The Swiss football federation paid tribute to Shaqiri, stating that a significant part of the country’s football history leaves with him. “With Shaqiri, a big part of the Nati’s history is gone. In recent years, the attacking midfielder was the man for special moments,” said the SFV.

They thanked Shaqiri for his unforgettable contributions and wished him success in his future endeavors. “We thank you with all our hearts for the many unforgettable commitments and the wonderful goals and assists in the national team. We wish you the best for your future and much success.”
