Berlin is celebrating the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall with a huge open-air installation, and numerous other events to follow this weekend.

The Berlin Wall fell on November 9, 1989 after months of peaceful protests in East Germany, with full reunification coming less than a year later in October 1990.

Some 5,000 posters are on display in the centre of Berlin along the former route of the Wall, in an exhibition titled: “We hold freedom high.”

Created in workshops held by schools, church parishes and cultural associations, the banners combine the demands made by demonstrators against the former socialist dictatorship, along with the aspirations of modern Germany.

The installation, which took several days to set up, is around 4 kilometres long, extending from the Reichstag to the Brandenburg Gate and the well-known Potsdamer Platz square.

Multimedia presentations and small exhibitions at several stops along the route provide information about the events of 1989.

On Saturday, a concert is to be held along the installation featuring hundreds of musicians playing the “Soundtrack of Freedom,” organizers said.
