Heavy rains trigger landslides in Nepal; 11 killed, 8 missing

Heavy Rain

Rainfall in Nepal over the past day has resulted in floods and landslides.

Intense rainfall over the past 36 hours has triggered deadly landslides and flash floods across Nepal, killing at least 11 people and blocking major highways, according to officials. Eight people remain missing, either swept away by floodwaters or buried in landslides, while 12 others have sustained injuries and are receiving medical treatment. Rescue efforts are underway to clear the debris and reopen roads, with heavy machinery being deployed, police spokesperson Dan Bahadur Karki reported.

In southeastern Nepal, the Koshi River, notorious for causing annual floods in India’s Bihar state, is flowing above the danger level. District official Bed Raj Phuyal warned residents to remain on high alert as the river’s flow surged to 369,000 cusecs per second—more than double its usual volume of 150,000 cusecs. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as they brace for potential flooding.
