Hamas Says It is Prepared To Adopt Ceasefire Without New Requirements”
The Palestinian organization Hamas said on Wednesday that its negotiators reaffirmed their willingness to put into effect a “immediate” ceasefire with Israel in Gaza based on an earlier proposal from the United States, free of any new demands from either side.
In a statement, the Palestinian group said that their negotiation team, headed by senior official Khalil al-Hayya, met with mediators in Doha on Wednesday to talk about the most recent events in Gaza. The mediators included Egypt’s chief intelligence officer Abbas Kamel and Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani of Qatar.
There has been no agreement reached in the talks to conclude the 11-month conflict. Control over the Philadelphi corridor, a slender area on Gaza’s border with Egypt, is one issue that has persisted.
A more thorough ceasefire proposal is expected in the coming days, according to CIA Director William Burns, who serves as the lead American negotiator in Gaza.
A three-phase ceasefire was outlined in the previous plan, which U.S. President Joe Biden presented in June, in exchange for the release of Israeli hostages.
