Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has appointed Jillian Segal, a Jewish lawyer and business leader, as Australia’s first anti-Semitism envoy. This move comes amidst a rise in targeted attacks against Jewish communities due to the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict. Jillian Segal brings extensive legal and business expertise, having served as deputy chancellor of UNSW and on the board of the National Australia Bank. She also has a background as president of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry (ECAJ).
In announcing her appointment for a three-year term, Prime Minister Albanese emphasized that Segal’s role will focus on promoting social cohesion amid tensions sparked by the Middle East conflict. He highlighted the importance of addressing anti-Semitism and ensuring respect and harmony within Australian society. Segal will advise both the Prime Minister and Multicultural Affairs Minister Andrew Giles on combating anti-Semitism, promoting education, and raising awareness on the issue.
Minister Giles praised Segal for her strong principles and unwavering commitment. Albanese also reaffirmed the government’s intention to appoint a special envoy on Islamophobia. The recent increase in anti-Semitic incidents in Australia, including fears among Jewish schoolchildren and vandalism at the Australian War Memorial, underscores the urgent need for such appointments.
