On the night between Sunday and Monday. The body of 83-year-old Guerrina Skocaj was recovered overnight after the corpse of Quirin Kuhnert, a 32-year-old German man, was found on Monday.Kuhnert died in a heroic attempt to try to get Skocaj out of her home as he realized a landslide was coming after the town was hit by a wave of torrential rain. The entire area is a now huge pile of rubble.Firefighters managed to pull one person out of the rubble alive. That person suffered a broken leg and was taken to hospital in Udine. The extreme weather also caused flooding, damage and major disruption to other parts of Friuli Venezia Giulia, which has declared a regional state of emergency, and other regions.Scientists say the climate crisis caused by human greenhouse gas emissions is making extreme weather events such as heatwaves, droughts, supercharged storms and flooding more frequent and more intense.Although there are many sources of the greenhouse gases that are causing global heating, the main driver is the burning of fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal, sales of which generate huge profits for the world’s energy giants.
