A multi-vehicle collision occurred on westbound I-80 at 11:37 a.m. local time, as reported by the Wyoming Department of Transportation. Images shared by the Wyoming Highway Patrol showed a massive plume of black smoke rising from the entrance of a tunnel.
Authorities confirmed that two fatalities occurred outside the tunnel, with a fire at the scene causing car tires to explode due to intense heat.
Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon announced that state resources have been deployed to aid recovery efforts, and he is closely monitoring the situation. He expressed his condolences, stating, “I am praying for everyone affected and their families. I have directed relevant agencies to work with local communities to provide support to the injured, those who have suffered losses, and to address ongoing issues.”
The transportation department confirmed that the crash site has been secured, and the 1,100-foot tunnel has been evacuated. A section of I-80, a major route connecting California and New Jersey, remains closed indefinitely. Bridge engineers and geologists from WYDOT are heading to the site to assess the tunnel’s condition.
Darin Westby, director of the transportation department, shared his grief for the victims’ families, saying, “My thoughts and prayers are with everyone impacted. WYDOT and WHP are on-site, assisting emergency responders and managing traffic control.”
Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County reported treating victims from what they described as a “mass casualty incident.” They advised the public to avoid visiting the hospital unless they were immediate family or had an emergency. By late afternoon, the hospital resumed normal operations.
