Canada Imposes 100% Tariff on Chinese Electric Cars Amid Trade Tensions

Electric Cars

Canada has announced a 100% tariff on electric cars manufactured in China, set to take effect on October 1st. Additionally, the country plans to impose a 25% tariff on Chinese steel and aluminum starting October 15th. These measures come as Canada and its Western allies accuse China of unfairly subsidizing its electric vehicle (EV) industry, giving Chinese car makers an undue advantage in the global market.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated, “We are transforming Canada’s automotive sector to be a global leader in building the vehicles of tomorrow, but actors like China have chosen to give themselves an unfair advantage in the global marketplace.”

China has strongly condemned Canada’s actions, labeling them as “trade protectionism” and claiming they violate World Trade Organization rules. A spokesperson for the Chinese Commerce Ministry argued that Canada’s actions “seriously undermine the global economic system, and economic and trade rules.”
