The floods have devastated a Christian girls’ summer camp located on the banks of the Guadalupe River – about 20 children are still missing
US President Donald Trump has called the disaster “terrible” and says the floods are “shocking” – and Texas Governor Greg Abbott says rescue operations will continue overnight and calls for prayers from the community
There are limited details so far about the people that have been killed in the floods. But a county judge has said at least five people were from the Houston area of Texas.
Posting on social media Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo says: “Today, my heart aches for our neighbours in Kerr County.
“The violent surge of flood waters is something we are all too familiar with. I pray that emergency personnel are able to promptly find the young girls missing from Camp Mystic.”
Hidalgo says it has resources available to fulfil any requests for help.
“Harris County mourns the victims – five of whom have been confirmed from Houston/Harris County,” she adds.
“All of Texas is impacted by this tragic event.”
