Denmark rejects Japan’s request to extradite anti-whaling activist | NHK

Denmark has refused to extradite anti-whaling activist Paul Watson to Japan.

The Danish justice ministry decided on Tuesday not to grant a request by the Japanese government to hand over the former head of the Sea Shepherd group.

Japanese authorities have obtained an arrest warrant for Watson on suspicion of organizing forcible obstructions of research whaling. The officials put him on a global wanted list via Interpol.

Watson was detained in Greenland — an autonomous territory of Denmark — in July.

Calls against Watson’s extradition have grown, particularly from anti-whaling countries.

French President Emmanuel Macron, for example, has asked the Danish government not to agree to Japan’s request.
