Chinese police detain driver who rammed car into crowd, leaving many injured

Police in China say they have detained a man who rammed a car into a crowd of people in Guangdong Province, causing injuries to many of them.

Police say the 62-year-old man drove into people at a sports facility in the city of Zhuhai on Monday night. The driver was apprehended at the scene.

Images posted on Chinese social media show many people bleeding and lying on the ground, as well as those receiving heart massage.

A number of police officers were deployed to the scene and roads around the area were blocked.

It is unknown how many people were injured.

Chinese media have quoted one of the four hospitals that accepted injured people as saying that it has treated more than 20 of the injured.

The incident occurred amid extensive news coverage by the state-run television of an airshow, which is set to open in Zhuhai on Tuesday. The event is one of the largest airshows in China.
