British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is planning to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae in Japan. His visit will likely take place during the latter half of next week.

Multiple Japanese government sources say arrangements are being made for Starmer’s visit. It will be his first trip to Japan since he took office.

Takaichi and Starmer are expected to discuss their desire to cooperate more in the fields of economic security and defense. Conversations about economic security will likely touch upon the need to strengthen supply chains.

The sources also say that Starmer plans to travel to China before he visits Japan.

The Japanese and British leaders will likely exchange views on Beijing, as well.

Takaichi wants to gain Starmer’s understanding regarding Japan’s position. This comes as ties between Japan and China have worsened.

In November, Takaichi and Starmer held face-to-face talks on the sidelines of the G20 summit in South Africa.

Campaigning for next month’s Lower House election is expected to begin in Japan next Tuesday. Takaichi intends to engage in summit diplomacy even during the campaign period.
