BEIJING – China’s athletes have been enjoying unprecedented success as the Paris Paralympics approach their final day of competition on September 8, but not many people in the nation seem to be taking notice.

The Olympics were widely watched, with the winning Team China athletes being hailed as national heroes and the United States and China having a fierce medal table rivalry that was closely watched.

However, many Weibo users expressed dissatisfaction this past week under a news post stating that China possessed more gold medals than the United States and Britain combined. Not enough people pay attention to this. It feels like there has been very little coverage (of the Paralympics) on TV,” read one comment.

Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, which holds the rights to the Paralympics, has aired events live on its two free sports channels. But wider coverage has been modest compared to the Olympics.

“There’s more media coverage than there used to be,” Mark Dreyer, a Beijing-based sports analyst, told AFP.
