Province, Dec. 29. Yonhap

At least 62 people were dead and many others presumably injured after a Korean passenger plane carrying 181 people crashed at an airport in the country’s southwest on Sunday, police and firefighters said.

The accident happened at 9:07 a.m., when the Jeju Air flight veered off the runway while landing and collided with a fence at the Musan International Airport in the Muan county, about 288 kilometers southwest of Seoul.

Authorities confirmed 62 people died in the crash — all of whom were found at the tail section — with the casualties likely to increase. Two have been rescued.

The crash significantly damaged the plane, resulting in a fire.Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident. While there was suspicion that the plane’s landing gear malfunctioned, some witnesses also reported they saw the plane collide with birds.

As of 11 a.m., emergency responders have rescued two people.

Acting President and Deputy Prime Minister Choi Sang-mok ordered relevant authorities to mobilize all personnel and tools to rescue people. As of press time, he is heading to the scene of the accident.
