Victoria Police have thwarted an alleged terror plot by a 19-year-old Melbourne man, thanks to a crucial tip-off from the FBI. The suspected plot included plans for a mass shooting, blowing up a university, and poisoning the state’s water supply.
Counter-terrorism officers searched the suspect’s home in Melbourne’s south-east, uncovering handwritten notes that detailed the violent plans. The notes allegedly outlined intentions to carry out a mass shooting at the suspect’s former high school, derail a train, and contaminate Melbourne’s water system.
During the raid, police discovered a cache of weapons and materials for homemade explosives. Among the items were metal parts for firearm construction, 522 rounds of ammunition, a Taser gun, explosive chemicals, chemical glass, a bayonet, and various tactical gear, including a military vest, gas mask, and shock collar.
The man was first arrested in April and charged but had been released on bail. Following the FBI’s alert, the investigation into the suspect’s activities intensified, leading to the latest discovery and potential prevention of a catastrophic attack.
