Senior officials from the United States and Iran have wrapped up their third round of talks covering issues including Tehran’s nuclear program, without reaching an agreement. But the foreign minister of mediator Oman says there was “significant progress,” and a meeting will be held next week.
The latest round of negotiations was held on Thursday in Geneva. The high-level talks had resumed earlier this month for the first time in about eight months.
Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi said technical teams will be part of the next meeting to be held next week in Austria. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also expressed an intention to continue talks, saying a “fourth-round” meeting may be held within a week.
He would need to be able to explain that he offered a deal but the Iranian side rejected everything. Abrams added that such a scenario is possible.
He noted that Trump “doesn’t want extended commitments.”
Abrams said he believes Trump does not seek to overthrow the Iranian regime, but instead aims to end “the threat that Iran poses to our Arab friends in the region and Israel.”
Abrams said Trump’s approach is to conduct a limited strike if Tehran does not meet US demands, and then negotiate further.
