Venezuelan opposition presidential candidate Edmundo González has left the country and is seeking asylum in Spain. This comes after he contested the results of the July presidential election, where the government-controlled National Electoral Council declared President Nicolás Maduro the winner. Following the opposition’s challenge, an arrest warrant was issued for González, prompting him to go into hiding.
Vice-President Delcy Rodríguez confirmed via social media that González had taken refuge at the Spanish embassy in Caracas before formally requesting political asylum. The Venezuelan government has since granted him safe passage to Spain.
