The son of television celebrity Rodolfo Sancho Aguirre, Daniel Sancho Bronchalo, asserted that he killed Edwin Arrieta Arteaga, a plastic surgeon from Colombia, out of self-defense. At the beginning of August 2023, he entered a guilty plea.
At the time, the now-30-year-old Sancho claimed to be a “hostage” to Arrieta because she was fixated on him, speaking to the Spanish news agency EFE.
Numerous Spanish reporters are traveling to Thailand to cover the trial because of the intense interest this case has created in Spain.
Sancho was convicted of premeditated murder, hiding a dead body, and causing property damage.
After considering his cooperation during the trial, the court on the nearby island of Koh Samui, where the case was heard, commuted the murder conviction to life in prison.
Sancho, a chef with a popular YouTube channel, was also mandated to compensate Arrieta’s family with 4 million baht (£118,000; £89,00).
According to the victim’s family attorney Bussakorn Kaewleeled, they were happy with the result.
“The plaintiff is satisfied with the sentence because they (the plaintiff) receive some financial compensation and he (Sancho) will be put in prison for life,” Bussakorn said to reporters outside the Koh Samui courthouse, according to the AFP news agency.

The trial is drawing so much attention in Spain that a large number of Spanish journalists are coming to cover it in Thailand.
