In Hawaii, roads became choked with traffic as residents sought to flee to higher ground.
The first waves in Hawaii were expected to hit at 7pm local time (6am UK time).
In Japan, nuclear plants along the Pacific coasts have suspended their work.
In Russia, there have been reports of some injuries and waves of up to four metres in the Kamchatka Peninsula.
Kamchatka governor Vladimir Solodov earlier said: “Today’s earthquake was serious and the strongest in decades of tremors.”
