Death toll from heavy rain in Asia climbs to over 1,300, more than 900 missing –

|The death toll from torrential rain, floods and mudslides has risen to 1,379 in Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Thailand.

On Sumatra Island in western Indonesia, 744 people have been confirmed dead, while 551 are missing.

More than 500,000 people are said to have been forced to evacuate after their homes were flooded in North Sumatra Province.

Evacuees living in shelters say they will not be able to return home anytime soon and they are worried about their children’s health.

Indonesia’s disaster management agency has been working with the military for rescue and relief operations.

But their efforts are facing difficulties, as roads were cut in many of the affected areas. Restoring infrastructure is a major challenge.

The number of fatalities from the disaster has reached 465 in Sri Lanka and 170 in Thailand.

More than 900 people remain unaccounted for in Indonesia and Sri Lanka.

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto pledged to rebuild infrastructure while visiting affected areas. Some areas remained unreachable, with roads damaged and communications lines down. Residents relied on aircraft delivering supplies.
