Zelenskyy to decide next steps after briefing about peace talks with US

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he will make a decision on “the next steps and the timing” of a potential peace plan after being briefed about last weekend’s negotiations.

The talks in Geneva on Sunday took place between one of his top aides and high-ranking US officials. The two sides said they have drafted an “updated and refined” framework for the agreement.

Media reports say Washington’s initial plan had Ukraine making major territorial concessions to Russia.

Ukrainian officials reportedly spoke ahead of the meeting with their counterparts in the UK, France and Germany. They apparently wanted to urge the US to modify the plan.

The outcome of the talks drew positive, but cautious, reactions.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said: “It’s got to endure. So that’s the focus. There’s more work to do. As you know, along with President Macron, I’ve been leading the coalition of the willing, which is a group of countries that have put in place support for Ukraine.”

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said: “We welcome the fact that these talks in Geneva took place. We also welcome the interim results. A number of issues have been clarified. But we also know that peace in Ukraine will not come overnight.”

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he hoped a deal could be reached by Thursday, which was the deadline proposed by President Donald Trump. However, he suggested it could take longer.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that some adjustments to the plan have been made. However, he added that he has yet to see anything official.

Reuters reports that US and Ukrainian officials have discussed the possibility of Zelenskyy traveling to the US to discuss the peace plan with Trump.
