A school district in western Arkansas said Wednesday that two of the three people killed in an early morning house fire were students.

Greenwood Police said in a Facebook post they responded to the fire shortly after midnight, and did not immediately release the names or ages of the victims. A fourth person has been hospitalized from the fire with life-threatening injuries.

The cause of the fire was under investigation, and crews were still processing the scene Wednesday morning, police said.

Two of the people killed in the fire were students at Greenwood Public Schools, the district said. The district said it had arranged for counselors to be available at each of its campuses.

“Our deepest sympathies go out to the families involved, as well as to our dedicated staff and students, as we navigate this sorrow together,” the school said in a statement.

Greenwood is located about 95 miles (153 kilometers) northwest of Little Rock.

Spain races to save victims as floods kill more than 60 –
Spanish rescuers on Wednesday scrambled to save people trapped by surging tides of muddy water in floods that have killed at least 62 people in the eastern Valencia region.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez urged citizens not to lower their guard as the emergency continued and pledged not to “abandon” victims of the disaster on a scale rarely seen in the European country.news conference.

The downpours have thrown normal life out of gear in the country with many left without power or cellphone services. Many places were cut off by flooded roads and several 100 people are feared trapped.

Cars lay scattered and piled on top of each other on roads near the Mediterranean coastal city of Valencia after a mudslide, an AFP journalist saw.

Sanchez has told victims of devastating flooding in Spain that the government “would not abandon” them as a provisional toll soared to 51 dead.

“All of Spain weeps with all of you. Our absolute priority is to help you… We won’t abandon you,” Sanchez said in a televised address.

The European Union, meanwhile, has offered its help to the country.

“What we are seeing is devastating,” von der Leyen told a news conference. “We have activated our Copernicus satellite system to help coordinate the rescue teams, and we have already offered to activate our civil protection mechanism.”

The central government’s representative in the Valencia region, Pilar Bernabe, said emergency military response units were being sent from several regions to reinforce the rescue work.

Defence Minister Margarita Robles told reporters “more than a thousand troops” backed by helicopters were being deployed in the face of “an unprecedented phenomenon”.

Emergency services in the Valencia region rescued almost 200 people overnight who were being sheltered in fire stations, Basset added.

Footage showed torrents of water gushing through streets Tuesday washing away cars, while rail and air transport was severely disrupted.
