Ratan Tata, the former chairman of Indian conglomerate Tata Group, died on Wednesday at the age of 86, Tata Group said in a statement.
“It is with a deep sense of loss that we bid farewell to Mr. Ratan Naval Tata, a truly extraordinary leader whose immense contributions shaped not only the Tata Group but also the fabric of our nation,” wrote N Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata. Children, in a statement.
On Monday, Tata had said on social media that he was undergoing routine medical check-ups due to his age and unspecified health problems at a hospital in Mumbai. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi described Tata as a visionary leader and an extraordinary human being. “He has provided steady leadership to one of India’s oldest and most prestigious companies. At the same time, his contribution has gone far beyond the boardroom,” Modi told X.
