Passengers and crew aboard a New Zealand navy ship made a dramatic rescue after their vessel ran aground off the coast of Samoa in the South Pacific, caught fire and sank.

According to the New Zealand Defense Force, HMNZS Manawanui first ran into trouble at about 6.45pm on Saturday while conducting a hydrographic survey just one nautical mile off the island’s coast.
The exact cause of the grounding remains unknown, but it appears that the ship collided with the reef.
