Germany captain Alexandra Popp retires from national team

Alexandra Popp, the captain of Germany and a fan favorite, looks to be hanging up her international career.

On Monday, German captain Alexandra Popp declared her retirement from the game of football internationally.
The striker ended her 14-year national career, in which she made 144 appearances, scored 67 goals, won a gold medal at the 2016 Olympics, and finished second in the 2022 Women’s Euros.
German captain Alexandra Popp announced her retirement from international football on Monday. In a moving video, Popp stated, “After long, heartbreaking considerations, I have decided with a heavy heart to end my national team career.

“My body is a ticking time bomb, and nobody should get in front of me. Now is the appropriate moment to put out the fire before it goes out entirely because by then it will be too late.”
On Monday, October 28, Popp will play her final game for Germany when they play Australia in Duisburg.
