After several days of deadly violence in the Kurram district, which is close to the Afghan border and has been rocked by unrest, the authorities say they are working with tribal elders to mediate a peaceful resolution.

In the mountainous Kurram district, rival tribes have been at odds for decades

According to authorities, a violent conflict between Sunni and Shiite Muslim tribes in northwest Pakistan has claimed the lives of over 20 people as of Wednesday.

The ongoing sectarian clashes, which stem from a land dispute, began five days ago in the Kurram district on the border with Afghanistan.

The authorities reported that at least seventy-five people had been injured.

According to a senior administrative official stationed in Kurram, “all efforts by the government and other tribes to end the fighting have failed,” dozens of homes have been damaged.
