Switzerland: Prisoners break out of a jail near the German border

Two men who were imprisoned for major crimes—one from Tunisia and the other from Algeria—have escaped. How the two managed to escape the Basel prison is still a mystery.Authorities announced on Friday night that two inmates had broken out of their Basel, Switzerland, jail.

It was unclear at first how they had gotten away.

They were both incarcerated for severe offenses.

Among them is a 37-year-old national from Algeria. According to Swiss media outlet SRF, he is charged with robbery, grievous bodily harm, and intentional homicide, among other offenses.

A 22-year-old Tunisian is the other man who escaped; he is charged with trespassing, damaging property, and entering Switzerland illegally.

The two men’s escape point, the Bässlergut prison, is situated directly on the German border.

International police are looking for the runaways, according to Swiss authorities.
