The US-Canada border’s century-old rail lift bridge has collapsed.
. — It is unclear when the Rainy River waterway near the cities of International Falls, Minnesota, and Fort Frances, Ontario, will reopen to water traffic due to the collapse of a century-old rail lift bridge.
According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, no trains were involved in the collapse on Wednesday, and no one was hurt.An investigation is underway to determine the cause.
According to the Canadian National Railway, some “biodegradable, non-toxic hydraulic oil” leaked, but environmental workers were able to contain it and are now trying to retrieve the fluid.
The building was constructed in 1908, and work has started on repairs. Known by two names, the Rainy River Rail Lift Bridge and the 5 Mile Bridge, it swings up to allow traffic to cross the river that runs from Lake of the Woods to Rainy Lake and forms the international border.
