Putin announced the 32-hour halt on Thursday.
The president reportedly instructed Defence Minister Andrei Belousov and the Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, Valery Gerasimov, to halt combat activities on all fronts during this period.
The Kremlin reportedly expects the Ukrainian side to follow Russia’s example.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made a similar proposal last month.
In a social media post on Friday, he said, “We proposed a ceasefire during the Easter holidays this year and will act accordingly.”
Zelenskyy added, “People need an Easter free from threats and real movement toward peace.” He also asked Russia not to resume strikes after the holidays.
Both the Russian Orthodox Church and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church observe Easter this year on April 12.
Putin unilaterally declared a 30-hour ceasefire to coincide with Easter in April last year, but Moscow and Kyiv accused each other of repeated attacks during that period.
