The high representative for Gaza of the “Board of Peace,” Nickolay Mladenov, reported to the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday for the first time. US President Donald Trump established the board to oversee the transitional governance in the enclave.
Mladenov said members of the “National Committee for the Administration of Gaza” are preparing to enter the strip. He said, “Fifteen Palestinian technocrats, approved by consensus among Palestinian factions, now form the incoming transitional civilian authority for Gaza.”
He said the committee has “made strong progress in vetting tens of thousands of qualified Palestinian civilian police candidates who will form the backbone of law and order in Gaza.”
He added that Albania, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kosovo and Morocco have committed to sending troops as part of an international force. They will be responsible for disarming Hamas and other groups, and he called on all UN member states to consider sending forces of their own.
He noted that 60 to 70 percent of Gaza’s infrastructure has been destroyed and the healthcare system has “collapsed.” He said the board has been having talks with Israeli authorities because it wants to make sure that the number of trucks bringing goods into Gaza increases as soon as possible.
