UN rights chief urges states to end extremely dangerous Iran conflict
The United Nations’ top rights official has urged states to end the Iran conflict, describing the situation in the Middle East as extremely dangerous and unpredictable.
“This conflict has an unprecedented power to ensnare countries across borders and around the world,” United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk told an emergency meeting of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, which was called by Gulf states.
“The only guaranteed way to prevent this is to end the conflict, and I urge all states, and particularly those within fluence, to do everything in their power to achieve this,” he said.
Iran hits targets across Middle East after Trump cites talks
Iran targeted countries across the Middle East with a fresh series of missiles, hours after US President Donald Trump signalled tentative progress in diplomatic efforts to end the war.
The conflict that began on 28 February with US-Israeli strikes on Iran has intensified throughout the Middle East, impacting world energy markets.
Iran fired a barrage of “precision-guided” missiles and drones at Israel and bases hosting US forces in Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain, the country’s Revolutionary Guards said.
AFP images captured rocket trails streaming over the skies of Israeli coastal city Netanya, as air raid sirens blasted across much of the country’s central region.
Drones hit a fuel tank at Kuwait International Airport sparking a fireball, while authorities in Jordan reported shrapnel falling near the capital Amman and air raid warnings rang out in Bahrain.
Iran has lashed out at Gulf nations, long seen as a relative safe haven in a tense region, affecting their tourism industry and crippling global air travel as their major hubs come under attack.
