The Wall Street Journal has quoted US officials as saying President Donald Trump “is open to supporting groups in Iran” that aim to “dislodge the regime.”
The US has continued attacks on Iran with fighter jets, drones and other weapons. The Trump administration has said it is not currently planning to send ground troops to the country.
In a report on Tuesday, the WSJ quoted officials as saying, “President Trump is open to supporting groups in Iran willing to take up arms to dislodge the regime.”
The newspaper also reported, “Trump spoke Sunday with Kurdish leaders, officials said,” referring to the leaders of armed Kurdish groups based in areas along the Iran-Iraq border and elsewhere.
The WSJ said, “Officials said Trump hasn’t made a final decision on the matter, including whether he would provide arms, training or intelligence support to antiregime groups.”
A White House spokesperson told NHK that Trump has been in contact with many allies and partners over the past several days.
Trump has called on the Iranian people to topple the current regime and expressed intent to provide support. But observers say providing more weapons to armed groups could lead to major chaos.
