The United States and Israel have been intensifying their attacks on Iran in the wake of the death of Tehran’s top leader. The conflict has been escalating since Iran announced it would launch retaliatory strikes.
Iranian media outlets have quoted the Red Crescent as saying attacks on 24 of Iran’s 31 provinces have left at least 201 people dead. The organization reportedly added 740 have been injured.
People holding national flags were seen gathering on the streets of the capital, Tehran, on Sunday. They were mourning the country’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
A special council has been formed in the nation. It will carry out leadership duties and govern the country until the next top leader has been elected.
President Masoud Pezeshkian is one of the council’s members. He has released a video statement. It is his first since the attacks began.
He said the armed forces are taking action with great strength to destroy the enemy’s bases. He added they will leave the enemy hopeless, as always.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps issued a statement on Sunday. It said the country had used four ballistic missiles in an attack on the USS Abraham Lincoln. But the US Central Command denied the aircraft carrier had been hit. It reported Iran’s missiles had not even come close to the vessel.
Meanwhile, local Israeli media outlets said an Iranian ballistic missile hit a residential area near Jerusalem on Sunday. They reported nine people had lost their lives in the attack. They added one person was killed in Tel Aviv on Saturday.
Iran also attacked US bases and other facilities in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and other Gulf countries.
The UAE’s defense ministry said 165 ballistic missiles and two cruise missiles had been launched toward the country. It added more than 540 unmanned aircraft had been detected. The ministry reported three foreigners have been killed and 58 others have been slightly injured.
The US Central Command says three service members have been killed in action, as part of Washington’s Operation Epic Fury.
About 200 Japanese nationals are currently in Iran. Japan’s foreign ministry says it may evacuate them to neighboring countries by land, if they want to go abroad.l
