The Metropolitan Police have confirmed they are carrying out searches at two addresses as part of their investigation into Peter Mandelson.
Deputy assistant commissioner Hayley Sewart of the Metropolitan Police, said: “I can confirm that officers from the Met’s central specialist crime team are in the process of carrying out search warrants at two addresses, one in the Wiltshire area, and another in the Camden area.
“The searches are related to an ongoing investigation into misconduct in public office offences, involving a 72-year-old man.
“He has not been arrested and enquiries are ongoing.”
He has previously said in a statement: “I was wrong to believe Epstein following his conviction and to continue my association with him afterwards. I apologise unequivocally for doing so to the women and girls who suffered.”
The Met Police investigation was announced hours after the Lord Speaker confirmed Mandelson would step down from the House of Lords following allegations concerning his relationship and dealings with Jeffrey Epstein.
Mandelson had already been sacked as US ambassador in September because of his links to Epstein.
The lobbying firm co-founded by Mandelson also announced on Friday it had cut all ties with the former US ambassador and announced the departure of its boss Benjamin Wegg-Prosser.
Global Counsel said Lord Mandelson no longer has a stake in the business nor any influence over it.
ITV News has attempted to contact Mandelson multiple times in relation to the allegations against him but has not received a response.
Where does Mandelson feature in the Epstein files?
The US Justice Department released more than three million pages of documents, including over 2,000 videos and 180,000 images, last week, and Mandelson’s name appears many times.
Documents from the release appear to show Lord Mandelson suggesting to Epstein in 2009 that he would lobby the UK government over the matter of bankers’ bonuses.
