White House says 3 federal reviews underway after Pretti killing in Minneapolis

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt on Monday said that there are three separate federal investigations underway after Saturday’s fatal shooting of Alex Pretti by a Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) agent in Minneapolis.

“As President Trump said yesterday, the administration is reviewing everything with respect to the shooting, and we will let that investigation play out,” Leavitt said, noting that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and FBI were investigating the incident while CBP was conducting an “internal review.”

The killing of 37-year-old Pretti on Saturday has renewed uproar nationally, and Senate Democrats have said they will vote against the DHS funding package as Jan. 30 shutdown deadline looms.

Some Republican lawmakers are joining Democrats in calling for an impartial investigation into Pretti’s shooting.

This morning, Trump said he had a productive call with Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D-Minn.) and that he would send border czar Tom Homan to the state to begin managing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) actions there.

A federal judge in Minneapolis heard arguments Monday as the state of Minnesota sues the Trump administration, saying its immigration raid tactics are unconstitutional.

On Capitol Hill this week, the House is out, but the Senate is in, and it must pass spending bills to avert a government shutdown.

Trump on Monday will hold policy meetings and do a radio interview.
