The man was arrested in France last Saturday (4 October). He is suspected of having stabbed to death a woman of 48 in the Brugse Poort area of Ghent on 12 August. Lisa De Wilde of the East Flemish Prosecutor’s Office told VRT News that “Detectives were able to identify a suspect at the beginning of September. The man was of no fixed abode and had apparently left the country”.

A European arrest warrant was issued and police services across Europe were alerted. Now almost 2 months after the murder a suspect has been detained. “This happened last weekend. The man was arrested on 4 October by the French police. A prosecutor here has initiated proceedings to ensure the suspect is transferred to Belgium soon”.

The investigation seemed to have stalled in recent weeks, but behind the scenes, progress was being made. The murder that took place at the victim’s home, caused shockwaves this summer. The victim was a single mother that lived on the Lieremanstraat. She died after being stabbed several times. Investigators are still in the dark about the motive for the murder.
