What is happening inside Iran has been even harder than usual to verify after the country was plunged into a near-total internet blackout.
For five days, most Iranians were unable to contact the outside world. Only now have limited phone connections begun to return.

Protester ‘on the brink of execution’, human rights group warns
A protester is “on the brink of execution” this morning, a human rights group has warned.
Erfan Soltani, from the city of Fardis to the west of Tehran, is due to be executed today, Norway-based rights group Hengaw says.
The 26-year-old was reportedly arrested last Thursday and his death would be the first execution of a protester from the demonstrations, the US State Department said on its Persian-language X account previously.
But it warns “he will not be the last”.
Hengaw says that Soltani is in the Qezel Hesar Prison “and the likelihood of his execution within hours is very high”.
