The US states of California, Oregon and Washington will launch a health alliance to promote their own vaccine policies, saying President Donald Trump’s administration is putting the American people’s health at risk.

The governors of the three states announced the creation of the “West Coast Health Alliance” on Wednesday.

In a joint statement, the governors said that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, has become a political tool that “increasingly peddles ideology instead of science.” They said they “will not allow the people of our states to be put at risk.”

They also said the alliance will ensure that public health policies in the three states are informed by trusted scientists and clinicians and other public health leaders.

They said they are beginning the process to “provide evidence-based unified recommendations to their residents regarding who should receive immunizations.”

They added that “the Alliance will finalize shared principles to strengthen public confidence in vaccines and in public health” in the coming weeks.

Also on Wednesday, the top health official in Florida announced plans to scrap requirements for school-based vaccinations.

The state surgeon general said in a news conference his department is going to end all vaccine mandates in Florida, saying every one of them is wrong and “drips with disdain and slavery.”

The moves by the states came after Trump fired the CDC director less than a month after she took office, saying she was not aligned with the administration’s policy.

Other top CDC officials have also resigned. They have argued that Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and other officials are promoting anti-vaccine policies.
