Laura Caron, 34, has been charged with aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, and endangering the welfare of a child after she was arrested on Wednesday.Laura Caron, 34, was taken into custody on Wednesday and now faces charges of aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, and endangering the welfare of a child. She is alleged to have had an inappropriate sexual relationship with the minor between 2016 and 2020.
Caron taught the pupil at a Middle Township Elementary School in New Jersey, where she was a fifth-grade educator. But police began an investigation when the victim’s dad created a social media post in December suggesting that her five-year-old child bore striking similarities to his son, according to 6ABC. Authorities have since alleged that Caron gave birth to the baby in 2019 when she was 28 and the victim was 13.
The victim’s parents said they had been friends with Caron and had allowed their kids to stay at her address for a couple of nights a week. However, between 2016 and 2020, the period when police say the offending took place, the children were staying with her permanently.
The victim’s sister came forward to police years earlier, when her brother was 11, saying she believed he was sleeping in the same bed as his teacher. The criminal complaint, seen by 6ABC, alleged that the kids under the teacher’s care would sleep on the second floor. But she often found her brother in Caron’s room during the morning. She also alleged that Caron would enter the bathroom while the victim was showering.
Later, the victim allegedly confessed to his sibling that he had fathered a child with Caron. But he told her in a text message that she should not tell anyone else. The boy went on to allegedly admit to police that he had a sexual relationship with Caron. But he said they had not communicated after his father’s haunting post on social media about her child.
On Wednesday, police raided Caron’s address and took her into custody. Jeffrey Sutherland from the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office said the case represented a “deeply troubling breach of trust”.
He said: “This arrest underscores the unwavering commitment to our office and law enforcement partners to protect the children in our community. Teachers hold a position of great trust, and the allegations in this case represent a deeply troubling breach of trust. We will work tirelessly to ensure justice is served and to support the victim and their family throughout this process.”
Laura Caron has now been charged with aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, and endangering the welfare of a child (
The prosecutor also advised that Caron may spend over 20 years behind bars if she is convicted.
Middle Township Police Chief Tracey Super said: “Our department is working closely with the Prosecutor’s Office to ensure that every aspect of this case is thoroughly investigated. If there are others who may have relevant information, I urge them to come forward Immediately. No piece of information is too small when it comes to protecting our community.”
The Middle Township School District has been notified and is cooperating with law enforcement. Counseling and support services are being made available to students, staff, and families who may be affected by this news.
