Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy is in Berlin for talks with Germany’s Friedrich Merz and other European allies. European leaders proposed a multinational force to enforce a Ukraine peace deal.
Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov told state-run television on Sunday he thinks the contribution of both the Ukrainians and Europeans to the documents “is unlikely to be constructive, and that is the problem.”
He noted that Russia hasn’t seen them, saying that if there are “relevant amendments,” Moscow will have “very strong objections,” including on the
Zelenskyy met with US special envoy Steve Witkoff and President Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner to discuss the US-drafted peace proposal.
After the meeting, Zelenskyy said, “My message on security guarantees is that before taking any steps on the battlefield, both the military and the civilian population must have a clear understanding of what the security guarantees will be.”
When talking about security guarantees, he referred to NATO’s Article 5, which handles the right of collective defense. Zelenskyy added that ceasefire monitoring should be a part of them. He also said he thinks the US side is trying to find consensus.
US officials said Washington suggested “multiple” solutions to bridge the gap on the territorial issue between Ukraine and Russia, but it is up to Kyiv.
