Canada Air India plane makes emergency landing in Canada after bomb threat

The emergency landing comes less than a day after the conflict between Canada and India over the killing of a Sikh separatist escalated. On Monday, Canada expelled six Indian diplomats, including the High Commissioner, in connection with the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India responded by ordering the expulsion of six senior Canadian diplomats, including the acting high commissioner, and said it had withdrawn its mandate from Canada. This diplomatic conflict represents a major deterioration in relations between the two Commonwealth countries. Relations have soured since Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said last year that he had evidence linking Indian agents to the killing of the Sikh leader on Canadian soil. The government now has “clear and convincing evidence that agents of the Government of India have engaged and continue to engage in activities that pose a significant threat to public safety,” Trudeau said at a press conference. India has long denied Trudeau’s allegations. On Monday, he rejected Canada’s approach to the inquiry and accused Trudeau of pursuing a “political agenda.”
