44 people have died and nine others are missing due to recent heavy
The precipitation, which continued for a week through Tuesday, caused flooding and mudslides in mountainous areas of the Chinese capital.
Many of the dead were from a facility for elderly people in the Miyun district. The district’s chief acknowledged its response was insufficient, saying the facility was not included within a zone where people should evacuate under an emergency plan.
Many posts have been seen on Chinese social media saying that senior Beijing city officials should resign to take responsibility for the outcome.
In the summer of 2023, flooding and mudslides caused by heavy rain also resulted in severe damage in suburbs of the Chinese capital. Authorities said at that time that 33 people died and 18 others were missing.
