Google’s AI model faces probe over data use in EU

The Irish regulator assisting in the oversight of data privacy in the European Union stated that the investigation is “of crucial importance in ensuring that the fundamental rights and freedoms of individuals are adequately protected.”The Data Protection Commission of Ireland has opened an investigation into Google Ireland to determine whether or not the search engine giant’s division complied with data-protection requirements before developing one of its AI models.

The DPC said on Thursday that “a Data Protection Impact Assessment, when required, is of crucial importance in ensuring that the fundamental rights and freedoms of individuals are adequately considered and protected” when processing personal data is likely to result in a high risk.

The DPC claims that, in collaboration with peers in the European Union and the European Economic Area, its investigation is a component of a larger initiative to regulate the processing of personal data in the development of AI models and systems.
