Aryna Sabalenka claimed her first US Open title, putting the heartbreak of last year’s final behind her by defeating home favorite Jessica Pegula.

“You will eventually achieve your dream if you put in a lot of effort and sacrifice,” Sabalenka said. “I’m just super proud of myself. I never say that, but I’m super proud of my team for getting through this and winning these beautiful trophies.”

Despite a strong push from sixth seed Pegula, who was cheered on by a supportive crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Sabalenka prevailed. The 30-year-old Pegula, playing in her first Grand Slam singles final, fought hard, especially in the second set where she led 5-3. However, Sabalenka mounted a strong comeback to secure victory in one hour and 53 minutes. She claimed 2,000 ranking points and took home a prize of $3.6 million (£3.04 million).

Sabalenka’s win adds another major title to her successful year, while Pegula’s wait for a first Grand Slam title continues.
