Ukraine has started using F-16 fighter aircraft in combat against Russia, according to a U.S. official. This move comes in response to Russia’s extensive aerial attacks on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure. The F-16s are the most advanced weapons provided to Ukraine by a U.S.-led coalition in its ongoing conflict with Russia.
Initially, the White House and Pentagon hesitated to offer the fighter jets, concerned that Russian President Vladimir Putin might view them as an escalation. However, U.S. allies eventually provided the jets, and Ukrainian pilots have been training in the U.S. for months. The first F-16s arrived in Ukraine in early August.
These fighter jets are not only supporting ground forces but also capable of shooting down drones and missiles, helping to protect Ukrainian airspace from Russian incursions. The official confirming their use in combat was not authorized to make public statements.
