India’s Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled that a nine-member task force should be set up to map out regulations governing safe work spaces for doctors.

The order was issued just a few days after a 31-year-old trainee doctor was raped and killed, sparking nationwide protests.

The judge directed the task force to develop plans for making hospitals and medical campuses safer for doctors.

Deeply concerned about the “horrific” rape and murder at Kolkata’s R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, Chief Justice Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud of the Supreme Court expressed his thoughts.

“The national interest and the equality principle both demand that doctors, especially women doctors, be kept safe. The country can not wait for another rape before taking action, according to Chief Justice Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud.

Doctors have held protests and candlelight marches across India — even refusing care for non-emergency patients  — since August 9 when the killing took place in the capital of India’s West Bengal state. Medics said the assault highlighted the vulnerability of healthcare professionals.
