Gardai believe teen who stabbed army chaplain has ‘radical Islamist mindset’, court hears

Adolescent faces charges in relation to the army chaplain’s stabbing at the Galway barracks
The minor, who cannot be named because he is a teenager, is accused of assaulting Fr. Paul Murphy at Renmore Barracks and causing him harm. The 16-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared before Galway District Court on Saturday afternoon.

He is charged with assault causing harm in relation to the incident on Thursday evening.

Fr. Paul Murphy, the victim, is a 50-year-old man who is recovering in a hospital following surgery for serious but non-life-threatening wounds.

A Garda Síochána (Irish Police) objected to a bail application citing the seriousness of the offence and said in court that there could be more charges as the investigation proceeds.

The accused was thought to be a flight risk, a detective informed the court.

Given the gravity of the case and the strength of the presented evidence, Judge Gerard Furlong denied bail.

The adolescent was placed under remand at Oberstown Children Detention Campus and is scheduled to return to court on August 20.
