The Supreme Court of Bangladesh, on Sunday, scaled back the controversial quota system for civil service job applicants, reducing its scope but stopping short of complete abolition. The decision comes in the wake of the system’s reinstatement last month, which triggered widespread and deadly civil unrest across the nation. Bangladesh’s top court on Sunday asked student protesters to “return to class” after issuing its verdict on contentious civil service hiring rules that precipitated deadly unrest, a lawyer involved in the case told AFP.
“The court has asked the students to return to class,” said Shah Monjurul Hoque, who represented two students in a case seeking to overturn the quota scheme.
